Working smoke alarms alert Burnside family

A family of six escaped a large house fire at Fydler Avenue, Burnside early on Friday morning, thanks to their working smoke alarms.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) firefighters were called to the incident at 2.56am following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) reporting the blaze.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find significant smoke and flames issuing from a single storey brick house.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews got to work quickly using multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire.

The incident was declared under control at 3.31am, 35 minutes after FRV arrived on scene. The fire was contained to the building of origin, however the house sustained significant damage in the fire.

Two patients suffered burns to their hands and were transferred into the care of Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

The cause of the fire is deemed to have originated in a clothes dryer.

Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the morning undertaking fire duties and extinguishing hot spots.
