As Victorians eagerly prepare their Christmas feasts this week, firefighters are reminding them to take some simple steps to avoid burning the turkey – or themselves.
Last financial year, Victoria’s fire services responded to more than 900 kitchen fires sparked by cooking.
Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Block said when it came kitchen safety, the proof was in the pudding.
“Cook up a storm, not a fire, this Christmas and always look while you cook,” Commissioner Block said.
“Unattended cooking is one of the most common causes of house fires in Victoria, with people frequently leaving pots to boil on the stove as they attend to other matters.”
“We understand people will be excited to see their loved ones after a challenging couple of years, but it’s crucial that you stay in the kitchen at all times, until your cooking is completed.
“Also be sure to keep a close eye on any children in the kitchen, as children are at a greater risk of suffering from burns.”
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said all firefighters wanted for Christmas this year was for Victorians to be safe.
“When it comes to kitchen safety, a little bit of elbow grease can make all the difference,” Chief Officer Heffernan said.
“Give your stovetop, oven and grill a good clean before you fire them up, to avoid a build-up of grease, fats and oils from catching alight.”
“Never use water to extinguish an oil or grease fire and we recommend having a fire extinguisher or fire blanket handy as well.”
